“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” – 1 Peter 3:15

1. Who is Jesus?

Romans 1:1–4
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 8:3
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh.

2. Why Do We Need Him?

Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3. What Did Jesus Do for Us?

Romans 5:8
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1 Peter 2:24
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

4. How Can We Be Saved?

Romans 10:9–10
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Ephesians 2:8–9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

5. What Should I Do?

Romans 6:11–13
So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life.

Romans 12:1–2
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

6. What Happens After I’m Saved?

Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

7. How Can I Be Sure I’m Saved?

Romans 8:16
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

1 John 5:11–13
And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.

A Simple Prayer of Salvation

Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe you died on the cross for my sins and rose again. Please forgive me, come into my heart, and be my Lord and Savior. Amen.

About This Article

There are numerous versions of the Romans Road to Salvation. This is the version that means the most to me.

I was compelled to write this article after listening to Shawn Ryan’s interview with Lee Strobel and John Burke. I typed up a small version on my Smith-Corona Silent typewriter and laminated it to use as a bookmark.
