The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck, M.D.

The Road Less Traveled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth, by M. Scott Peck, M.D., is one of the few books I’ve listened to on audiobook, then had to go back and re-read the ebook version. Peck tackles some tough topics, from the problems and pain in life and love, to reconciling the differences between religion and science, and thoughtful evaluations of miracles and grace.

There are numerous examples of ways to improve your happiness and relationships in everyday life, as well as how to evaluate your personal journey of spiritual growth.

This is one of the books I would feel comfortable giving a young person who is graduating high school or college, or to the colleague who appears lost and listless in their life.

Some of my favorite quotes:
– “The life of wisdom must be a life of contemplation combined with action.”
– “If we feel ourselves valuable, then we will feel our time to be valuable, and if we feel our time to be valuable, then we will want to use it well.”
– “By far the most common and important way in which we can exercise our attention is by listening.”
– “Each of us has his or her own urge to grow, and each of us, in exercising that urge, must single-handedly fight against his or her own resistance.”
– “The universe, this stepping-stone, has been laid down to prepare a way for us. But we ourselves must step across it, one by one. Through grace we are helped not to stumble and through grace we know that we are being welcomed. What more can we ask?”

Thanks for encouraging me to read this book! I enjoyed it as well. And was surprised to learn that Jonathan Livingston Seagull has a soundtrack…and it’s by Neil Diamond!
